Week 37 - Bed 11 Planting

This bed will be covered with a mini polytunnel when the weather turns cold and will hopefully provide tasty young carrots, beets and parsley during the winter. We added some compost to the empty section at the north end of this bed and sowed an equal area each of:

  • Boro F1 Beetroot - a hybrid variety with deep red internal colour, fine texture and taste
  • Nelson F1 Carrot - an early Nantes type hybrid variety which is tasty and sweet, deep orange with a straight tubular shape
  • Amsterdam Forcing 3 Carrot - an early variety that is very quick to mature, small cylindrical roots with a rich deep orange red colour and almost no core
Instead of planting in rows, each of these varieties were scattered over about 1/4 of the bed, and raked lightly to cover. We do not normally use hybrid F1 seeds but thought we would try some in this case.

The parsley is doing well and is ready to start harvesting.
